A.   Mouthparts form a tube-like proboscis adapted for piercing and sucking.  Palps are absent.

A: Order Hemiptera


B.   Mouthparts form a coil beneath the head.  Palps are usually present and clothed with hair or scales.

B: Order Lepidoptera


C.   Mouthparts are mandibulate – adapted for biting, chewing, or grasping.  Palps are present.
