Lab 15. Work on Collections/Review for Lab Practical Exam 2

This is an informal lab (i.e. we will NOT meet due to Thanksgiving break).  The materials below will help you to work on finishing your insect collection, and help you prepare for the lab practical.

Activities

1. Work on Insect Collections

Make use of the following:

• Insect Collection Instructions
• Insect Identification materials presented below

2. Review Insect Identification to Order

Review the following materials:

• Your own notes, and “Lab 2: Insect Orders“
• The “Orders and Families Required for Spot ID” tab with a list of links
• Spot ID Characters handout with list of characters for each insect order
• Spot-ID Narrated Slide Show that illustrates how to recognize Spot ID characters
• “Orders Practice Test” (see course Moodle site)

3. Review Identification of Hemimetabola Families

Review the following materials:

• Your own notes from Lab 11
• The families in orders Odonata, Orthoptera, Hemiptera  (See the “Orders and Families Required for Spot ID” tab with a list of links)
• Remember, only review identification for adults; no immatures will be on the exam

4. Review Identification of Holometabola Families

Review the following materials:

• Your own notes from Lab 12 and Lab 13
• The families in orders Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera (See the “Orders and Families Required for Spot ID” tab with a list of links)
• Remember, only review identification for adults; no immatures will be on the exam
