Common Name:  Jerusalem crickets, sand crickets

Description:  This is a family of relatively large, wingless insects that burrow in the ground and feed mostly on plant roots, other insects, and dead organic matter.  They are native to the western United States and Mexico – usually found only west of the Rocky Mountains.

  1. Large, round head with widely spaced eyes and antennae
  2. Bulbous abdomen marked with distinctive bands of black and tan
  3. Wingless
