Common Name:   Gall Wasps

Description:   Cynipids are very small, black wasps whose larvae induce the formation of galls in their host plants.   Adults can be recognized by their humpbacked profile, distinctive wing venation, and compressed abdomen with telescoped segments toward the rear.

Spot ID Key Characters:

  1. Abdomen with two segments visible dorsally, the remainder telescoped beneath
  2. First segment of hind tarsi about as long as following two or three combined
  3. Antennae filiform with 13-16 segments
  4. Venation reduced to anterior portion of the wing and lacking a stigma
