A. Compound eyes meet (or nearly meet) in center of head. Stem of “M” vein about as long as its branches. Body and wings are smoky black in color.
A: Family Sciaridae
B. Compound eyes do not meet. Stem of “M” vein is much shorter than its branches. Body is usually brown; wings are mostly transparent.
B: Family Mycetophilidae
