Common Name:   Snipe Flies

Description:  Medium to large flies with long legs and a tapering abdomen.  Most species are gray, brown, or black with yellow or orange markings.   Some have patterned wings.  Both adults and larvae are predaceous.

  1. Tapering abdomen
  2. Large, round head
  3. Body may be bare or covered with short hairs
  4. Feet have three tarsal pads (empodium is pulvilliform)
