Common Name:  Predaceous Diving Beetles

Description:   Dytiscids have an oval, streamlined body that is usually dark brown or black in color.  Some species have yellow or tan markings on the pronotum or the margins of the elytra.   Both adults and larvae are predators of other aquatic organisms.

Spot ID Key Characters:

  1. Antennae filiform
  2. Middle legs arise much closer to front legs than to hind legs; mesosternum broad and flat
  3. Hind tarsi bear a single straight claw
