Common Name:  Carrion Beetles

Description:  Carrion beetles are medium to large in size and relatively flat.   They have clubbed antennae.   Most species have a black body — some also have patches of red, orange, or yellow on the elytra or pronotum.   Silphids typically feed on the dead bodies of other animals, but some may also be found in fungi.

Spot ID Key Characters:

  1. Antennae clubbed (clavate or capitate)
  2. Elongate oval body
  3. Black; often with red, orange, or yellow markings
